The final women’s game of the Classic was the best, as Kaiya Mack scored 39 points and Cal Lutheran outlasted Wittenberg 98-93 in overtime.
Cal Lutheran seized the lead 81-78 on Mack’s three-pointer with 1:39 to play in regulation but Wittenberg quickly answered with a Karsen Karlblom layup. The Regals split a pair of free throws, which gave the Tigers a chance to tie, and they did on two Madi Barnett free throws with four seconds left in the fourth quarter.
Mack picked up where she left off in overtime with a three-pointer that pushed Cal Lutheran’s lead to four and that was still the lead when Karlblom hit a three with 34 seconds left in the game, pulling the Tigers within one at 94-93. Jana Holley converted two pressure-packed free throws to push the Regals lead to three and, after a Wittenberg turnover, Mack iced the game with two more.
Mack made 10 of her first 11 shots and finished with 39 points, which was the second-highest single game total and took home Most Outstanding Player honors. Holley tallied 20 points and eight assists, tying the Classic record. Cal Lutheran improved to 7-3 with its fourth straight win.
Riane Burton scored 26 points and Karlblom added 22 more for Wittenberg (8-3). Karlblom finished 6-for-6 from three-point range, setting the D3hoops.com Classic record for three-point percentage.
Redlands got a flurry of threes early and kept St. Vincent at arm’s length the rest of the game in a 64-53 victory. Redlands’ offense was firing on all cylinders in the first quarter, as the Bulldogs had 10 assists on 11 field goals, including five three-pointers. St. Vincent hung tough but could not get closer than nine points for much of the second half, and that was the final deficit.
First-year guard Alex Facelo went 6 for 8 from three for 18 points and Colbi Zorich capped an impressive weekend with 18 points and six rebounds for Redlands (7-5). Makenna Maier scored seven points and grabbed 10 boards for the Bearcats (5-6).
Colorado College used one 11-0 run to grab the lead against SUNY New Paltz and a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach, as the Tigers overpowered the Hawks, 76-61.
SUNY New Paltz struggled against Colorado College’s size and trailed 40-31 at the half, but the Hawks turned the game around in the third quarter with pressure defense. SUNY New Paltz forced 10 Tigers turnovers in the that period and led 52-49 on Sophia Bonnell’s three-pointer. But Colorado College responded with an 11-0 run, capped by Zoë Tomlinson’s layup that gave the Tigers a 60-52 lead entering the final period. After a New Paltz layup to start the fourth quarter, Laura Strenk hit a three that keyed a 10-0 Tigers’ surge, putting Colorado College in front by 16.
Colorado College got 62 points from its front court as Tomlinson posted 24 points and 18 rebounds and Kayla Mackel poured in 26 points in a full 40 minutes. Healy Bledsoe added 12 points and seven steals, tying the Classic record.
The Redlands men finished off their perfect run in Vegas as Chozen Amadi hit three three-pointers to start the game and Jhace Boston had 12 points and four blocked shots as the Bulldogs put New Paltz away, 78-66. The Redlands pressure generated most of the Hawks' 20 turnovers, as New Paltz was playing without point guard Sean St. Lucia, who injured his hand in the Hawks' previous Classic outing. Jake Hlywiak also hit double figures with 10 points for Redlands. Senior Mitchell Cummings had a career-high 18 points off the bench for the Hawks, who fell to 6-3 overall. Redlands improved to 10-2.
Amadi was named the D3hoops.com Classic men's basketball Most Outstanding Player.
Altogether, the SCIAC teams went 8-1 at the 2024 Classic, with the lone loss coming in Ramapo's win over Whittier on Sunday night.
Hardin-Simmons came out of Las Vegas with a 2-1 weekend as the Cowboys defeated Wittenberg 64-53 in the final game of the Classic. Both teams struggled from beyond the arc, but Austin Brewer had 11 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots, and Will Bartoszek added 11 points in one of his strongest performances since returning from injury. Wittenberg had four scorers in double figures, with Trey Killens and Eddie Brown scoring 11 points apiece and Tyler Galluch and Daniel Asher added 10. Wittenberg went on an 8-0 run to get back into the game before Hardin-Simmons puts things away.
